She Likes to Read

This little lady is a SERIOUS reader.
A 7 Year old curled up on a red couch reading

She has to read 20 minutes a day for school, but I'm pretty sure she'd read all day long if I let her (and if she has a book she likes, it's hard to convince her to stop for ANYHTING).

She's only in first grade and she's seriously just plowing though chapter books.

What is she currently reading you ask?

A 7 Year old reading The Hobbit on a red couch

Yep, you saw that right.  My first grader is currently reading the Hobbit! That book that I couldn't stand in 7th grade!  (Don't worry, I since have repented and mended my ways, but I still can't believe she hast the patience to read it...let alone likes it).

Albeit, she has told me she like to skip through it and read the parts she likes.   Bart read it to her last year as a bedtime story, so she knows the story.  But still.  I'm impressed.  I hope her love of reading lasts forever.

Learning to Read

_MG_1692 copy

Bet you didn't expect this post to be about Maya did you?  Yes, Hannah is also learning to read, and I will have to post a bit about her sometime, but I just had to share something that happened while I was cleaning this morning.

Maya had asked if she could watch Super Why. Now, if I let her, Maya would seriously watch TV ALL day.  She's a lot like Addison in that respect.  So I do try and limit what she watches.  And of the few shows I let her watch, Super Why is her favorite.  I like it too.  It teaches kids about letters, the sounds letters make, words, rhyming words, etc.  I needed to get some cleaning done in the kitchen, so I told her yes and turned it on for her.

I was listening to the show from the kitchen, and when Super Why asked the viewer what letters s/he saw on screen, Maya yelled, "N, T!"  Sure enough, a few seconds later, Super Why said, "N, T."  I went around the corner to see if she could do it again.

The next question that was asked was, "What letter makes the sound lllllll."  Maya yelled, "L!"

Not gonna lie, I was a little blown away.  Hannah is just now really learning her letters and what sounds they make, I can't believe my two year old is catching on so fast.  I think she really is talented when it comes to linguistics though...well, as talented as a two year old can be.  :)  She speaks very clearly and in surprisingly long sentences. I can't believe that a year ago I was worried that she wasn't speaking as well as I thought she should be.  Now it wouldn't surprise me if this one was reading (at least basic words) within a year.

The Way I View - Back To School

I can't believe another month has passed already.  I swear, the older I get, the faster time passes.

Well, this month's theme is "Back to School."  Even though Addison's my first in school, September has always felt like Back to school to me because Bart is a teacher.  But this year, the big difference in our house has been Addison reading for class.  Technically her homework is us reading 15 minutes every day with her, but we do that at bed time already, so I've been having her read books on her own, and she's doing great, and really enjoying it to boot!  :)

And um....is anyone as excited as me about Halloween?  Every time I go into a store I have to seriously restrain myself to keep from purchasing hundreds of dollars worth of Halloween decorations.  I suspect the next "Way I View" post is going to be fun.  :)

Check back and I'll include a link to the other Back to School posts in the blog chain.

Summer Reading Program

So our local library has a summer reading program for kids.  Technically since Addison hasn't gone to kindergarten yet she should have been in the pre-reader program, but when I found out the prize for doing all eight weeks of the regular reader program was a free pass to the swimming pool, I told them Addison could read and they let her do the regular reading program instead.  :)

She's been great at keeping up with the program.  She even reminds me that she hasn't done her reading yet when I forget.

A nice little side effect of the program is that Hannah LOVES to sit next to Addison and listen to her read.

It's not an uncommon occurrence for me to walk into the family room to see them snuggled up on the couch reading.

Reading02

And frankly, I LOVE it!

Before I know it, she's going to be adding subtracting, multiplying, and dividing!

Oh wait, that's right. She already does that too!  She really is my little smarty!
